Esta é a segunda parte da minha conversa com Mohammad Muzahir, também conhecido como Red Bull, o denunciante de crimes cibernéticos que aparece na reportagem da WIRED sobre complexos de fraudes. Na primeira parte, Mohammad contou como uma falsa oferta de emprego o levou a um centro de fraudes na região do Triângulo Dourado, no Laos, e como os trabalhadores forçados recebiam roteiros, identidades fictícias e contas roubadas. Desta vez, retomamos a conversa para falar sobre o que mantém as pessoas presas nesses locais, como os deepfakes tornam uma identidade fictícia convincente e como ele finalmente conseguiu sair. Esta conversa aborda tráfico de pessoas, violência e corrupção, e Mohammad relata tudo a partir da sua própria experiência.

Mohammad é um sobrevivente de tráfico humano e deixa claro que a maioria das pessoas forçadas a praticar burlas foi enganada da mesma forma que ele. Como Mohammad conseguiu sair

Mohammad diz que a sua história completa é longa e remete os ouvintes para o artigo da WIRED e para o vídeo do WIRED Hack Lab para conhecerem os detalhes. Quando saiu do complexo, não tinha um visto válido, pois tinha ultrapassado o período de permanência autorizado no Laos. Foi a um serviço de imigração e redigiu um requerimento em que explicava ser vítima de tráfico de pessoas e precisar de um visto humanitário para sair do país, já que não tinha como pagar a multa por permanência irregular. O funcionário recusou-se a ajudar, e uma ONG no andar de cima, que presta assistência a vítimas de tráfico de pessoas, também lhe negou ajuda. A multa era de 85 dólares. Andy Greenberg, da WIRED, não podia dar dinheiro a uma fonte por razões éticas, e Mohammad disse-lhe que estava pronto para voltar ao complexo. Uma multa de 85 dólares separava-o da possibilidade de partir, o que mostra como o caminho para a liberdade pode ser precário.

Como as pessoas são recrutadas, vendidas e mantidas em cativeiro

Mohammad descreveu um complexo sob vigilância constante, de onde os trabalhadores não têm permissão para sair. Ele dormia num beliche num dormitório com outras seis pessoas e viu vítimas de tráfico humano provenientes da Etiópia, do Paquistão, da Índia, do Sri Lanka e de Bangladesh. Quem o recrutou foi um amigo próximo que não sabia que o trabalho era uma fraude, embora o contacto desse amigo soubesse. Os trabalhadores são vendidos aos chefes por cerca de 2.000 a 5.000 dólares, dependendo do seu domínio do inglês, e o agente de recrutamento recebe uma comissão após um período de formação de sete dias. Quando Mohammad disse que queria ir embora, conta que foi espancado e mantido num quarto escuro. Muitas pessoas nem sequer tentam sair, por medo do que os chefes possam fazer. Ele também me contou que, segundo a sua experiência com centros de burlas no Laos, as autoridades eram pagas para fechar os olhos e os chefes tinham em sua posse carimbos dos serviços de imigração. Segundo ele, centenas de complexos em Myanmar continuam a recrutar pessoas na Índia e em África. Estas são as alegações que faz com base na sua experiência direta.

Mulheres reais, deepfakes e mensagens de voz

Mohammad diz que algumas das mulheres que trabalham no Sudeste Asiático são reais. Têm fotografias reais e históricos de viagens reais, e trabalham à comissão para os chefes. Se os investigadores fizerem perguntas, podem dizer que a sua identidade foi roubada. Perguntei-lhe o que as motiva, e ele diz que recebem uma percentagem do dinheiro que conseguem obter. Quando uma vítima está pronta para investir, a burla pode passar a recorrer a um deepfake. Um programa sobrepõe uma fotografia das redes sociais da identidade fictícia a um rosto numa videochamada em direto, e a vítima vê o que parece ser a mesma mulher com quem tem trocado mensagens. A chamada é breve e termina com um problema de rede, e depois chega uma mensagem de voz. Se os filhos ou netos da vítima disserem que é uma burla, a vítima aponta para o vídeo e para as mensagens de voz. As provas em que as vítimas confiam foram fabricadas.

Como verificar se uma videochamada usa um deepfake

O conselho de Mohammad para testar uma videochamada é simples. Peça à pessoa que vire a câmera para mostrar o cômodo, pois pode haver um computador à vista. Peça que se levante e caminhe. Peça que movimente o rosto e vire a cabeça, porque muitas ferramentas de deepfake têm dificuldade em reproduzir esses movimentos em um celular. Acrescentei que você pode perceber sombras e iluminação que não combinam. Ele diz que as mesmas técnicas aparecem em golpes de prisão virtual, que, segundo ele, também têm raízes no Sudeste Asiático. Se alguém afirma amar você e se recusa a fazer qualquer uma dessas coisas, encare isso como um sinal de alerta.

Onde os bancos e as autoridades policiais podem travar este fenómeno

Mohammad destacou algo que os bancos muitas vezes não percebem nas fraudes com criptomoedas. Eles monitorizam as transações, mas, quando a vítima transfere o dinheiro, o burlão já a convenceu. Ele sugere que os bancos introduzam um período de reflexão antes de grandes transferências para criptomoedas, suficientemente longo para que alguém possa falar com o cliente. Indicou, como referência, cerca de dois dias. Concordo que se deve abrandar o processo. Um cliente sem histórico de transações com criptomoedas que, de repente, envia dezenas de milhares de dólares para uma carteira é um padrão que pode levar os bancos a intervir. Ele também considera que as autoridades policiais devem analisar as conversas da vítima no WhatsApp logo no início, porque essas conversas contam toda a história. Acrescentei que muitas forças policiais locais não receberam formação sobre estas fraudes e que é importante dar-lhes essa formação. Agir rapidamente pode ajudar a recuperar o dinheiro.

Por que a vergonha deve recair sobre os criminosos

A maior dor, diz Mohammad, não é o dinheiro. É perder uma pessoa em quem se acreditava, o que pode ser sentido como uma morte. Concordo. A culpa não é da vítima, porque criminosos profissionais planearam cada passo, e a pessoa do outro lado pode existir apenas num guião que define a sua personagem. Mohammad incentiva as vítimas a falarem, nem que seja através de um vídeo curto, e a partilharem o que sabem com pessoas que colaboram com as autoridades. As vítimas têm endereços de carteiras digitais, domínios, aplicações e históricos de conversas de que os investigadores precisam. Gostava muito de acabar com essa vergonha e levar mais pessoas a falar. Ambos consideramos que se trata de uma crise humanitária e de uma questão de segurança nacional. Ele acredita que a pressão internacional sobre estes centros de burlas reduziria as burlas em todo o mundo.

  • Mohammad afirma que, segundo a sua experiência, as autoridades eram pagas para fechar os olhos e que os complexos continuam a recrutar, o que torna esta situação uma crise humanitária e uma questão de segurança nacional.

Mohammad transformou uma experiência terrível em algo que ajuda quem combate a fraude, investigadores e vítimas. O que mais me marcou foi perceber o quanto tudo isto depende da confiança. Um amigo garantiu que o emprego era legítimo. Uma identidade fictícia conquistou a confiança de uma vítima. Uma mensagem de voz fez tudo parecer real. As melhores medidas de prevenção de que ouvi falar também eram simples. Pedir à pessoa que vire a câmara para mostrar o que está à sua volta, não ter pressa em enviar dinheiro e dizer à vítima que a culpa não foi dela. Se conseguir incorporar uma destas medidas no seu trabalho este mês, estará a tornar alguém menos vulnerável a uma armadilha.
