What is the Travel Rule, in plain English?

In traditional banking, when money moves by wire, information about the sender and recipient has to travel with the payment from one bank to the next. The Travel Rule extends that same idea to crypto. Under a FATF standard, crypto service providers must collect and pass along originator and beneficiary details for transfers that qualify, typically those above a set threshold, so the identifying information moves alongside the value.

The point is to close a gap that crypto once left wide open. On a public chain you can see that value moved between addresses, but not who was behind them. Now change one detail: the customer instead sends the funds to a self-hosted wallet with no provider behind it. There is no counterparty business to exchange data with, so the clean handoff the rule assumes breaks down. The sending exchange has to fall back on collecting information about the beneficiary and assessing the wallet's risk on its own, which is exactly the recurring pain point compliance teams wrestle with.

Why it matters to operators

The Travel Rule is what lets identity follow value across the boundary between two crypto businesses. Without it, each provider sees only its own side of a transfer and the counterparty is a blank.
